Who qualifies?
You need to meet all four:
- Age: 18 or over
- Study type: Full-time course at a London institution
- Course length: At least one full academic year
- Institution: Your university or college must be registered with TfL's scheme
Most London universities and colleges are registered — UCL, King's, LSE, City, UAL, Brunel, SOAS, Goldsmiths, and others. If your institution is not on the list, contact your student services team; they may be able to get it added.
Part-time students do not qualify.
What the 30% discount covers
The discount applies to Travelcards and Bus & Tram Passes loaded onto your Student Oyster card.
Travelcards give you unlimited travel within chosen TfL zones. Common options:
- Zones 1–2: covers central London and most inner areas
- Zones 1–3, 1–4, 1–5, 1–6: for students living further out
- Available as off-peak daily, 7-day, monthly, or annual passes
Bus & Tram Pass covers unlimited bus and tram travel across all London zones, with no Tube access.
With a 30% discount, a zones 1–2 Travelcard works out meaningfully cheaper than daily PAYG tapping. Check the current price at tfl.gov.uk/fares — TfL adjusts fares each January — then multiply by 0.7 to get your student rate.
If you use the Tube fewer than three or four times a week, PAYG is probably cheaper. The Travelcard saves money only when you travel frequently.
How to apply
- Go to the 18+ Student Oyster application page
- Select your institution from the drop-down list
- Upload a passport-style photo — plain background, face clearly visible
- Upload proof of enrolment (a letter from your university registrar or admissions team, showing full-time status and course dates)
- Pay the £20 admin fee by debit or credit card
- Wait up to 10 working days for the card to arrive by post
Once the card arrives, add a Travelcard or Bus & Tram Pass at any Tube station ticket machine, at a newsagent near a station, or online at tfl.gov.uk.
Renewing each year
The card is valid for one academic year. At the start of each new year, log in to your TfL account and upload fresh proof of enrolment — TfL re-verifies your student status and reactivates the discount. There is no renewal fee.
If your card expires and you have not renewed it, PAYG taps revert to the standard adult rate until you do.

Applying before you arrive in the UK
You can apply online before arriving. You need your course acceptance letter and a UK delivery address — your halls of residence address works, as does your university's international office if they will hold mail.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Student Oyster or just a regular Oyster card?
If you study full-time in London and commute regularly, the Student Oyster pays for itself fast. The £20 fee is covered by the saving on a single month of discounted Travelcards. A regular Oyster card has no upfront cost but charges the full adult fare every time.
Does the 30% discount apply to pay-as-you-go fares?
No. PAYG taps are always charged at the standard adult rate, the same as a regular Oyster card. The discount activates only when you load a Travelcard or Bus & Tram Pass onto the card.
Can I use my Student Oyster to travel outside London?
Travelcards cover TfL zones only. You can exit through stations that have National Rail services (for example, some zones 1–6 stations), but you cannot take a National Rail train to another city using a TfL Travelcard.
What happens at the end of my course?
Your student status expires with your course. The card stops being discounted, but any PAYG balance you have loaded remains usable as a standard Oyster card.
