Quick answer
Most UK banks ask for a letter confirming your UK address when you open an account. As a student in university halls, your accommodation office can print one same day. In private accommodation, a signed tenancy agreement or a letter from your landlord both work. Monzo, Starling and Revolut skip the address requirement entirely if you just want a card to start.
Why banks ask for proof of address
UK banks are required by law to verify your identity and address before opening a current account. The rules come from the Money Laundering Regulations 2017, which the FCA enforces for all authorised banks. They need to confirm that you actually live at the address you've given — not a mail forwarding service or a friend's address.
For most people in the UK, this check is painless: they have utility bills, bank statements, or council tax letters addressed to them. International students arriving in September have none of those yet. Getting the right document is a one-step problem once you know what to ask for.
What counts as a valid address letter
Banks vary on this, but most accept:
- A letter from your university accommodation office on official letterhead, confirming your name and room address
- A signed tenancy agreement (private rental), dated and naming you as a tenant
- A letter from a private landlord, signed and on headed paper
- A council tax exemption letter or council tax bill addressed to you
- A letter from a regulated utility provider (gas, electric, broadband) addressed to you
The letter must:
- Be dated within the last three months (most banks; some say six)
- Show your full name as it appears on your passport
- Show your full UK address including postcode
- Come from an organisation the bank considers credible
A Royal Mail redirection confirmation does not count. A PO box address does not count.
Getting a letter from your university (fastest option)
If you're in university-managed halls, your accommodation office can issue a proof of residence letter. Many print these within minutes of being asked — it's one of the most common requests they get from new students.
How to get one:
- Go to the accommodation office in person, or email from your university address.
- Ask for a letter confirming your current address for bank account purposes, on official headed paper with a signature.
- Give your full name exactly as it appears on your passport.
- Collect the letter — or ask if they can email a PDF. Some banks accept a digital letter from a university.
Check your student portal before going in person. Many universities have a self-service section — often under "Student services", "Accommodation", or "My documents" — where you can download a proof of address letter immediately.
Private accommodation: what to use
If you're renting privately, several documents work:
Tenancy agreement. A signed tenancy agreement naming you as a tenant is accepted by most UK banks, including Barclays and HSBC. Bring the original or a certified copy. A photocopy alone is often refused in-branch.
Landlord letter. If your tenancy agreement is old or informal, ask your landlord for a short letter on headed paper confirming you live there. It needs their name, signature, contact details, and the date.
Council tax exemption letter. Once you've applied for your student council tax exemption, the council posts a letter to your address confirming your exempt status. It's addressed directly to you and makes a clean proof of address. The Luodi council tax guide covers the application step by step.
Utility bill. A broadband welcome letter or energy bill addressed to you works well. Broadband providers typically send a welcome letter within a week of signing up.
Before you have a fixed address
Some students arrive before their accommodation is confirmed. Two practical options:
Digital-only banks. Monzo, Starling, and Revolut all open accounts without any proof of address — just a passport and a short in-app video. You'll have a working UK card within 24–48 hours. This is worth doing on arrival even if you plan to open a high-street account later. The Luodi bank account guide explains the full process for both.
University temporary address. Some universities will issue a letter with your name at a halls address before you've been allocated a specific room — ask the international office or admissions. Make sure any bank post can actually reach you there.
Using the main university building address when you're not resident there is risky: the bank and your real address will be out of sync when they do further checks.
Which banks accept what
Monzo and Starling: No proof of address needed. Open in-app with passport only. Best for day one.
Barclays: Tenancy agreements and university letters accepted. Student account available online and in-branch.
HSBC: University letter on headed paper accepted for the student account. Branch appointment usually needed.
Lloyds/Halifax: University letters and tenancy agreements accepted. Halifax offers a basic account with lighter requirements if the student account hits snags.
NatWest/RBS: University letters accepted. Online start, but identity verification typically requires a branch visit.
Policies change. Ring the specific branch or check the bank's website the day you plan to visit — this prevents a wasted trip.
FAQ
Can I get a university letter before I move in?
Some universities issue a letter using the halls address before you arrive, if you've paid your accommodation deposit. Contact the accommodation office and ask directly. They handle this every autumn.
What if I'm staying with a friend temporarily?
Letters from private individuals aren't accepted by most high-street banks. Open a Monzo or Starling account instead — no address proof needed — and sort the high-street account once you have a formal address.
Does a PDF of my tenancy agreement count?
Most high-street banks still prefer to see originals in-branch. Monzo and Starling are more flexible about digital documents, though they don't require address proof anyway.
How long does a proof of address letter stay valid?
Three months from the date on the letter is the standard rule. Some banks stretch this to six months. If yours is older than three months, ask for a fresh one — accommodation offices issue these routinely.
Will a letter from the international office work?
Yes, if it's on official university letterhead, signed, dated, and shows your full name and UK address. An international office letter is treated the same as an accommodation office letter.
