Council tax is a local tax that most UK residents pay. As a full-time student you are completely exempt — you pay nothing. Most students miss this and end up paying thousands of pounds unnecessarily.
Log in to your university's online student system. Common names: MySIS (UCL, King's), MyManchester, MyGlasgow, SITS, Student Hub, or just search "[your university] student portal" online. Look for a section called "Council Tax Exemption Certificate" or "Student Status Letter".
The certificate is usually available instantly as a PDF. If you cannot find it, email your university's student services or registry office and ask for a "council tax exemption certificate". They must provide one.
Upload your certificate to the council's website using the link below. You'll need your name, address, and the PDF certificate. Takes about 5 minutes.
You will receive confirmation by post or email within 2 weeks. Keep it — if you ever receive a council tax bill, reply with this confirmation.
You still need to apply individually. Even if your landlord says you are covered, get the exemption certificate yourself to be safe. If any non-student lives in your house, they may still owe council tax — but your share is exempt.
